Presentation & discussion ... Roger Dugan, Sr. Technical Executive, EPRI will present on: "Distribution System Analysis for Smart Grid" Roger Dugan gave an overview of OpenDSS. OpenDSS is a long established (over a decade of development and use) Simulation Tool for electric utility distribution systems. ( sourceforge link: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/electricdss/index.php?title=Main_Page ) slides to be posted (from Roger to Craig to Win) Q. Bruce - re: availability of slides (see above) Q. Norkhum - plans/approach to optimization as part of simulation A. Roger - typically developed in Matlab and then Matlab is used to drive OpenDSS (note: the Matlab code is generally not available as open source) Q. is S&C's IntelliTEAM's simulated? A. not at this point. Control schemes are expressed in either - 'control objects' - or algorithms - typically in Excel or Matlab Graduate students have been and are currently active in this area. Q. Roger - How are / what universities involved A. (partial list) The University of Manchester University of Strathclyde (?) workshop @ UC San Diego (included students from CalPoly, Stanford, ...) University of New Mexico North Carolina State University Q. Nature of Relationships? contact or deeper - could relationships be improved? (increased sharing) A. European Universities seem further along - "Active Distribution Network" efforts PHD students generally ready to share work until near thesis completion Q. Amit - What are the development plans for OpenDSS A. modularize to enable 64bit & multi-platform (eg. linux) support on windows extend COM to in & out of process using FreePascal compiler - expect compilation in roughly a month, DLL for windows Amit - possible collaboration - using a Stanford undergraduate for recompilation using FreePascal 5. Work on open items 5a) review and approve WG charter Craig: discussion of changes In the Guiding Principles Section Bruce raised the issue of whether pursuing openness for an OpenSG working group is too understated and whether a stronger form is more appropriate. Craig noted that present practice is dominated by proprietary (commercial) tools and a desire to enagage the present and evolve to a more open tool chain. That the embracing of a modular Framework implies openness and for a developing sense of urgency. Craig in advancing the charter for review the Technical Committee ... ... "If sufficiently good and if no objections ..." No objections - so charter advanced. Note as part of reviewing the attendance ( meeting Quorum requirements ) a new member was online. Tony Giroti, CEO of Bridge Energy Group (www.bridgeenergygroup.com) , introduced himself. 5b) review strawman proposal for 2011 deliverables In the Model Inventory - Documention of (section) Models used by utilities Bruce raised the issue whether the intent was aimed towards desirable (as opposed to merely possible) sources, eg. the exclusion of universities) perhaps...generalize to 'used in the utility industry' ... In the absence of volunteers expect some taps on the shoulder from Craig. Some mention (by Bruce?) that at the first meeting there was mention of inventorying interesting problems, challenges, application domains (dare one say requirements) Craig: finding wording to balance exploratory yet concrete without exclusion c. discuss agenda items for OpenSG Plenary (f2f meeting), OpenSG - Sim's face to face meeting is currently scheduled for Wednesday, 3/10 @ 10:30 With no objections Craig will request rescheduling for sometime on Tuesday, 3/9 Ron noted that given the natural interest in working with the OpenSG's Communication Team to be mindful of schedule conflicts. 6. New Business - none meeting ends
